Skiing in Las Vegas?

dubai.jpgPeople come to Las Vegas for all kinds of reasons – conferences, gambling, golf, vacation, or just to experience the excessiveness that is the Las Vegas strip.

But what about skiing?

I’ve been in Las Vegas for the last six nights and after staring at a snowy capped mountain visible from the strip all week, I decided to Google “Las Vegas skiing.”

Enter Las Vegas ski & snowboard resort - only 45 minutes away from the strip in Las Vegas, it has 11 runs serviced by two chair lifts – all above 8,500 feet.  The runs aren’t very long – about 800 feet, or about the same length as Blue Mountain in Ontario.  If I would have known about this place, I may have packed my skis along with my golf clubs this week!

What about indoor skiing in Las Vegas?

Have you heard about Ski Dubai - the indoor ski resort in Dubai boasting 1,300 feet of vertical in the middle of the Middle East? If news that they are building a second even bigger resort isn’t enough of an incentive for you to fly to the Middle East, mark 2011 in your calendar….

Enter Las Vegas Wet - 1 billion dollar indoor ski and water park.

There are few details available – like how much vertical they’re going to build, but if the project is anything like every other project in Las Vegas, it will be impressive.

I’m not about to book a ski trip to Las Vegas Wet over a trip to Whistler - well ok, i would if they build over 5,000 feet of indoor vertical :)

Hi Phil,

5,000′ of vertical? I’m guessing that you mean total run length and not altitude drop! Obviously, we will be limited by land, but right now, although not the 5,000 feet you are hoping for, we will have about 2500′ of run length.

We are working closely with the folks involved with Ski Dubai along with the X-Leisure folks (they have three snow domes in the UK), so we will hopefully be learning from their experiences and mistakes.

We will be updating the site in the next few weeks, so keep in touch!

Steven – thanks for the updates and insight!

2,500 feet of length….. wow! That is impressive. Considering that 2,500 feet is about as long as the longest run east of the rockies (Le Massif in Quebec), that will be fantastic – and about 3 times longer than the “outdoor” las vegas ski & snowboard club discussed in this article.

Keep us posted with your progress!

Vegas likes to go bigger than anywhere else but it is hard to compete with the cash that is flowing through the middle east. It would be interesting for sure but so much of skiing for me is being outdoors, the views, trees etc. I guess I am just spoiled since I live in Steamboat.
